Plate or VIN? I don't think the license plate has anything to do with the car specifically.

You can search a Carfax report by Licence plate number, so I'd expect there is some way.

Probably depends on the state. Some states require that the plate stay with the car, others allow the plate to stay with the person. I've had the same plates on three different cars in Virginia. So basically, in the best legal fashion, the answer is that "it depends."

Huh, know anything about New York?

Not likely to be helpful, New York plates generally stay with the owner, not the car.

So, if I look the plate up on Carfax and it still comes back to the car that means the car still exists?

Either that, or the registration was never cancelled for some reason, or was cancelled and just wasn't picked up by Carfax.

No, but I'm sure you can check their DMV website for the requirement.

Huh, that's interesting. Thanks!

That seems strange. I've had the same plate on three very different vehicles.
